Stories from past winners
Scholarship recipients in 2022 shared some words about what winning the scholarship in their chosen field meant to them.
Grace Childs, Bachelor of Fashion Marketing and Enterprise
Grace Childs believes that the mentoring program is a huge benefit of this scholarship, as it allows students to gain real knowledge from someone who has established a career not only in the fashion industry but with the biggest-selling fashion magazine worldwide.
She remarked, “Throughout COVID, designers and creators were faced with challenges that forced them to explore alternative routes to keep the engagement and relationships with their audience. During this time, we also saw a surge in the amount of time people spent on the internet, which led to the rise of digital fashion. We found influencers attending fashion weeks in their own homes and designers using software such as CGI for their runways.”
Tamlin Labutte-Seddon, Bachelor of Interior Design (Residential)
Tamlin Labutte-Seddon views the mentoring program as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that provides the chance to showcase creative ideas and design skills. Tamlin explained, “The concept behind my cover story is that ‘creation runs free.’ The freedom to think and go in whichever direction you want creatively. My idea creates a dual perspective on both real and imaginary. Replacing a wild herd of wildebeest with furniture is a symbolic gesture to creation and how it is natural, pure, and limitless.”
Sunday Salt, Bachelor of Communication Design
Sunday Salt has held a lifelong dedication to all things fashion and beauty, and feels that mentorship from these highly regarded institutions is the best way to transform a passion into a career you would truly love. Sunday stated, “I have aimed to create visual captivation through various textures such as the paint strokes, superimposed flowers (relating to the ‘blossoming’ of the fashion industry in 2022 post-global economic depression), and detailed fabrication of the dress, all of which also allude to the concept ‘From Renaissance to Runway.'”
Abby Adlington, Bachelor of Interior Design (Residential)
Abby Adlington recognizes the value of professional support and is eager to receive guidance and constructive criticism from a mentor to advance her career. She utilized a photo from her parents’ building company, showcasing a beautiful bathroom renovation. Abby believes that numbers and fonts are powerful marketing tools to grab the audience’s attention and encourage readers to explore further. For instance, she used a large bold number 20 and the cursive word ‘simplicity’ in the bottom left corner. The colors chosen for the text were crucial to the color scheme and resolution of the cover’s palette.
