If you are someone who lives and breathes fashion and wants to make a career out of it, this blog is for you. Here’s a simplified, step-by-step guide on how to approach the discipline and become the fashion designer that you aspire to be –

Work on your Skills and Creative Pursuits

Creative problem-solving and out-of-the-box imagination are some of the most important qualities designers have. To work as a professional in the industry, you must work on these qualities and adapt to changes and different situations. You can also work on developing the knowledge and skills you might need. Stay updated on what’s happening in terms of fashion, practice fashion illustrations, get to know about theories and terms, work on your presentation skills, and get familiar with some of the software used in the industry.

If you are planning to pursue a Fashion Design course, these skill developments will come in handy both to clear the DAT/PI and to get ahead of the curve once you enroll.

Enroll in a Professional Fashion Designing Course

The best way to approach a career in Fashion Design is to enroll in a course. Most programs require you to clear a DAT or a PI after your 10+2/Graduation.

B.Des/B.Sc. in Fashion Design is a 4-year/3-year course that would introduce you to the fundamentals of fashion design, the elements and principles of design, and help you develop technical skills in pattern making, garment construction, draping, styling, fashion retailing, and relevant software. It would also facilitate industry exposure through internships and classroom projects so you can build a portfolio of your work.

A Master’s Degree in Fashion Design (M.Des/M.Sc) is an advanced 2-year course that touches upon the fundamental elements and principles of design, and technical skills. It acquaints you with design research and the business of fashion, relevant software, and other digital tools.

UG/PG Diploma with a  12-24 months duration offers an insight into the theory and practical knowledge of the discipline. Technical Skills and Relevant software are also important parts of the curriculum.

Short-term or certification courses range from 3 weeks to 6 months. If you are looking for a specialization or want to upskill, you can take a look at the courses offered by NIFT, NID, AAFT, and other colleges.

    Industry Experience

Most Fashion Design Institutes have Internships and training programs as a part of their curriculum. Excursions to trade fairs, fashion weeks, or internships and classroom projects can help familiarize with how the industry functions.

Industry experience helps you understand the latest trends, gain practical knowledge, closely observe the designing and manufacturing processes, and connect with professionals. A peek into the industry also equips you to gauge the competition and the complexities you might face.

    Create a Portfolio

Work on creating a portfolio that provides a glimpse of your unique style and aesthetic as well as all your talents and skills.

Shortlist your best projects and make sure they are distinct from one another. Convey your versatility through the various projects. Include technical sketches, detailed design processes, and digital illustrations, and showcase knowledge of materials and construction techniques. Ensure your work is cohesive and update your Portfolio accordingly. You can create a digital as well as a physical copy of your portfolio for convenience.

    Learn Networking

If you are enrolled in a fashion design college, you can connect with design professionals through seminars/webinars, workshops, expert lectures, etc. You could also join online communities, open forums, or social media groups to connect with people from the industry.

Networking is important in staying up-to-date on the latest trends, understanding the market, and finding leads. It could connect you with clients and recruiters and help land your dream job.

    Get Acquainted with Latest Trends

Acquaint yourself with the latest micro and macro trends by following forecasts, and understanding the interrelationship between larger global events and fashion. Go through international designers’ work and understand their design processes.

Following hashtags online, looking at fashion magazines, and reading blogs by experts on the topic are some of the other ways that you can familiarize yourself with what’s happening in the fashion scenario.

    Conclusion

As you go ahead with a formal course and work on your skills to prepare yourself for the industry, you will have to get used to the dynamism of the fashion industry. Adapting to technological innovations, enhancing your knowledge, and understanding zeitgeists are some of the key factors in becoming a successful fashion designer.

AAFT offers a range of courses in fashion design that facilitate design thinking and equip students to step into the industry with a complete understanding of its complex and dynamic nature. With a comprehensive curriculum that allows students to nurture their talents and develop their skills, you can build a rewarding career as a fashion designer.
